Suntory's Award-winning Yamazaki 18-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky
Just south of Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital and guardian of traditional Japanese culture, there is an area where three rivers - the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu – meet. Here, nestled between Mt. Tennozan and Mt. Otokoyama, is the misty vale of Yamazaki, an area of dense bamboo groves and pristine waters. The Japanese whisky pioneer Shinjiro Torii established Yamazaki distillery here in 1923, wishing to produce a whisky ideally suited to the Japanese palate, distilled and aged in a uniquely Japanese climate. Based loosely upon Scottish whisky distilleries, it is the first and oldest malt distillery in Japan and has been refining its techniques ever since. So much so, in fact, that today some of the most lavishly praised and respected whiskies in the world are produced here under the Yamazaki brand.
Yamazaki – perfect conditions for the perfect whisky
Owned by Suntory, Japan's largest and most renowned house of whisky, Yamazaki is the company's flagship single malt whisky, the product of over three generations of continual innovation and development. The Yamazaki 18-Year-Old is the most highly decorated spirit in this range, having surpassed even its legendary sibling, the Yamazaki 12 Year. Being a single malt, Yamazaki whisky is made solely at Yamazaki distillery from malted barley grain. The distillers take advantage of the soft, pure waters of this region in the production of Yamazaki whisky, before aging it for 18 years in casks made from the rare Japanese oak Mizunara. This aging process is aided by the variable, seasonal climate of the region which provides perfect casking conditions for the Yamazaki 18. The Mizunara casks then create unique flavors in the Yamazaki 18-Year-Old, a privilege only conferred to a select few Japanese whiskies.
Autumn berries and chocolate
Darker than its younger brother, Yamazaki whisky 18 has a deep amber color, and is described by Suntory as “rich with mature autumn fruit”. If the Yamazaki 12 represents the carefree days of summer, the Yamazaki 18 epitomizes the bounty of the autumn harvest.
Its fruity nose of apricot, raisin, and cafe au lait mingles with the oaky notes of Mizunara, bringing forth a rich palate of strawberry jam, blackberry, and deep, dark chocolate once this liquid gold hits the tongue. Its long, smooth, spicy finish with just a hint of smoke caps off this real king of whiskies. The Yamazaki 18-Year-Old is truly a spirit to be savored.
A century at Yamazaki
Shinjiro Torii began his mission in the 1920s with the aim of producing Japanese whisky for the Japanese people. Little could he have known that nearly a century later whisky produced at his original distillery by the company he founded would be winning such prestigious awards and accolades the world over.
